Be a Tidy Kiwi in Manukau
Manukau City Council is getting right behind the Be a Tidy Kiwi campaign this summer, and with the support of the MCC Community Litter Education Strategy various community and council initiatives will aim to eliminate the problem of litter in Manukau.
A 2005 survey showed 63 per cent of people in Manukau littered because they were too lazy or couldn't be bothered putting rubbish in the bin. Ten per cent said they didn’t care about the environment. The survey also found 75 per cent of people believe litter is everyone’s responsibility.
Manukau is a beautiful place, diverse in environments, cultures and ages, but as studies have shown – our efforts in keeping a high level of pride in the way Manukau looks has taken a turn from what it used to be, and now it’s time to “turn back the clock”.
Manukau City Council wants to enable Manukau communities to take pride in ‘their place’, to look after it and keep it litter free. Doing so will enhance our environments and make our communities a better place to live. No one wants to live in a dump – so let’s stop it from becoming that way by taking responsibility for our litter.
Be a Tidy Kiwi will feature widely throughout Manukau this summer – so keep an eye out and encourage others to put it in the bin!
Councillor Sharon Stewart encourages all Manukau residents and visitors to get behind the campaign, for all of us to go the extra mile, think about what will happen to that piece of litter that we’re just about to drop on the ground, or throw out the car window, and put it in the bin mate!
