Cultural and Social Attitudes
The review of studies listed above uncovered several reasons for littering that are influenced by cultural and social attitudes:
- Laziness, carelessness, indifference (35% gave this as a reason in the Williams et al (1997) study)
- Habit and forgetfulness (14% gave this as a reason in the Williams et al (1997) study)
- Inconvenience of holding onto waste (14% gave this as a reason in the Williams et al (1997) study)
- Belief that littering is not an important or serious issue
- A lack of sense of ownership
- Belief that someone else will pick up their litter
- Being unaware that they litter
- Copycat behaviour - other people litter
- Littering as a deliberate action
