Types of Litter

Williams et al (1997) found that the most common disposable items observed were food wrap and containers, drinks containers, paper products and cigarettes. This ties in with the results of the Be A Tidy Kiwi litter count (Auckland Region Litter Survey 2005), which found that on average, 25% of litter was food packaging and drinks containers.

Williams et al (1997) found that people were three times as likely to litter cigarette butts as they were to put one in a bin. However, they were three times as likely to put newspapers and other paper products in to a bin as they were to litter them, and seven times more likely to put drinks containers into bins than to litter them.

The investigation was taken further by asking people if they considered cigarette butts to actually constitute litter. More than four out of five people observed littering cigarettes said that they did consider them to be litter.
