Litter bin audit results 2023

The latest bin litter audit results are in, and they reveal both the challenges and progress in our fight against litter. Over the past three months, Be a Tidy Kiwi volunteers surveyed waste in various public spaces across the country. The findings show a worrying amount of plastic and single-use items still making their way into our environment. However, the audit also highlights a promising reduction in non-recyclable materials, thanks to increased awareness and participation in recycling programs.

Key hotspots for litter remain urban centers and beaches, with food packaging and beverage containers topping the list of common offenders. While there’s still work to be done, the audit indicates that small, consistent actions—like using reusable bags and properly sorting waste—are making a noticeable difference.

At Be a Tidy Kiwi, we’re committed to keeping New Zealand beautiful. The audit is a reminder that our collective efforts can have a meaningful impact. Want to dive deeper into the findings and see how you can help?
